Fortunately, the sergeants were able to roust the troops from their billets and with a little gentle encouragement got them heading south towards the French army heading north. My old sergeant grumbled something under his breath that sounded a lot like, "If we're lucky we'll run into the French before the officers catch up with us." But I'm sure he couldn't have said that.

The vanguards of the two armies met at Quatre Bras. But before we got there Wellington had decided to pull back and make a stand at Waterloo. Boney beat the Prussians at Ligny so it looked like we wouldn't get any help from them.
